Distance Learning and Copyright by Steven Armatas,

Attorney-at-Law / Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, LLPOft en what is permissible in face-to-face teaching situations constitutes copyright infringement when used in distance
learning. This three-hour workshop will address the different laws applicable to each setting with emphasis on
the evolving distance learning rules. Topics include the applicability of fair use to distance learning, the classroom
exemptions for distance education contained in the Copyright Act, the “safe harbor” provisions of the CONFU
Guidelines, and the legislative history and application of the TEACH Act. This presentation is given by means of a
PowerPoint presentation and related handouts and contains many real-world examples designed to spur discussion
among participants.

ePortfolios: Their Construction, Use and Assessment

Build, share and assess individual student and faculty portfolios. Evaluate readiness and needed support structures to
implement institutional portfolios. Learn the pros, cons, and issues associated with learning portfolios and showcase
portfolios. Understand through direct experience the relationship among portfolio artifacts, reflection and assessment
rubrics. Discuss multiple initiatives and identify strategies common to successfully instituting and sustaining ePortfolio
projects.

Ohio’s Second Life: Boot Camp and Field Trip

The virtual world of Second Life has captured the imaginations of students and educators from over 400 hundred
institutions around the world. As a platform for teaching, learning and research, Second Life provides a unique
combination of affordances for teaching classes, giving presentations and seminars, providing virtual meeting spaces for
distance education courses, and visualizing data, concepts and models in a variety of disciplines. Second Life Bootcamp
participants will dive into this creative place, learn to navigate the environment, and take a field trip to visit six showcase
virtual campuses created by some of Ohio’s premier educational institutions, starting on the Ohio Learning Network’s
campus, and then traveling to Bowling Green State University, Miami University, Ohio University, Ohio State University
and the University of Cincinnati . Participants will be engaged in discussion while exploring these virtual campuses to
learn about successful implementation strategies, teaching techniques in virtual environments, and what it means to
work, learn and network in a virtual world.

Podcasting Implications: The Path to Active Engagement in Higher Education Classrooms or How to Enrich Your

Distance Education

This presentation explores the use of podcasting as a pedagogical aid to enriching traditional classes or creating online
delivery systems. The author chronicles his experiences expanding his traditional course offerings with emerging
technologies such as podcasting. The workshop begins with a basic overview of podcasting equipment and available
programs. It concludes the presentation with a brief interactive demonstration to actively engage the audience by
creating an audio and video podcast.

Producing Video Clips for Specific Instructional Needs

This hands-on workshop will teach basic techniques in video production, how to effectively shoot video, and how to
edit custom-made video segments for classes or training. The workshop is designed for beginners and will cover basic
camera shots, audio and lighting techniques, as well as some program formats useful for various instructional situations.
Teams of participants will develop a program idea and a basic script and each team will shoot and edit a 3-5 minute
video to be shown at the end of the workshop. Enrollment is limited to 15 participants.
