A Piece of the PIE: Planning for the Implementation and Evaluation of Instructional Technology
Jillian Hinegardner, Instructional Technology Support Specialist / Ursuline College

One model for the effective use of instructional technology is a systematic process of Planning, Implementation and Evaluation (PIE). Participants in this session will be guided through the completion of a planning document while engaging in a dialogue with the facilitator and each other. Participants will identify a technology of interest, articulate a pedagogical rationale for its use, list information and resources needed to implement the technology, and propose a plan to evaluate the effectiveness of the implementation.

rjames01 Technology before objectives? 0 Mar 3 2008, 1:45 PM EST by rjames01

The question was raised about the wisdom of picking the technology before defining the learning objective. It should be the other way around -- in an ideal world.

The trouble is there is a wide gap in understanding between many technologists and educators. The technologist needs to be able identify the range of pedagogical applications for a technology in order to help an educator know enough to judge its potential application in their course.

And since people respond best to seeing actual examples, we almost have to pilot a technology with the aim of meeting learning objectives in order to really know what the technology can enable. So following the PIE process is a way of gathering data and experience to inform future decisions.
