The question was raised about the wisdom of picking the technology before defining the learning objective. It should be the other way around -- in an ideal world.
The trouble is there is a wide gap in understanding between many technologists and educators. The technologist needs to be able identify the range of pedagogical applications for a technology in order to help an educator know enough to judge its potential application in their course. And since people respond best to seeing actual examples, we almost have to pilot a technology with the aim of meeting learning objectives in order to really know what the technology can enable. So following the PIE process is a way of gathering data and experience to inform future decisions. |
