Ohio Has Too Many (Fill in the Blank) Programs; Let’s Get Rid of a Few

I believe that the environment in our state (attitude and priorities) toward education have changed in the past 50 (20, 10) years as have the needs and expectations of students. I also believe that our educational institutions have not changed to the same degree as either the environment or the needs so we are at a point of significant imbalance. Either we (the education system) act or others (the legislature, for-profits) will.

This session is meant to provide a forum for a significant discussion around the changing mission of colleges and universities. By starting with some pointed questions such as "what metrics are (should be) used to determine the quality and efficacy of a program", I hope we can explore together options for improving education for Ohioans.

I hope you'll join this discussion. If you do, bring your ideas, your creativity, your skepticism and your expertise. Be ready to listen, instruct and come to a fuller understanding of the challenges and opportunities we face.

While Governor Rhodes’ idea of a college within 50 miles of every Ohioan might have made sense at one time, it no longer fits current reality. Funding and student interest indicate that colleges, universities and the State cannot support every program. Will educational organizations make the hard decisions or will the State force changes? In this presentation we will explore participants’ ideas and concerns for programmatic changes in Ohio’s colleges and universities. Come prepared to share your ideas and concerns in a lively exchange with educators and administrators from around the state.
