Technology FAQ

1. Will there be wireless networking at the conference?

802.11b/g wireless networking support will be provided in all common areas of the conference. The network will be open with a name of ODCE. If your computer is set up to look for a specific network name or SSID you may have to replace that name with ODCE in your configuration. Please check with your local technology staff about how to configure your wireless connection before you come to the conference. Wireless networking will be available in the meeting rooms. Please respect the speaker and other attendees by refraining from the use of network devices, PDAs, and cellular telephones in the meeting rooms during sessions.

2. If I am bringing my own computer, what steps should I take before I arrive at the conference?

· Access will be available to the network for non-wireless laptop users via hard line connections located in the Cyber Café.
· Make sure your virus detection software is up to date.
· Make sure your computer has the latest software patches installed.
· Test your wireless laptop on your campus to make sure it can connect to a wireless network.
· Understand that connections to the Internet will be on a public network with many different users and computing platforms. Some of those systems may be infected with undesirable worms and viruses.

***If you are using Windows XP, ensure it has been upgraded to SP2. If not, please visit Microsoft for your free download: http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

3. Will there be computers with Internet access at the conference?

Computers with Internet access will be available in Regent 2, courtesy of Global Govt Education Solutions. Attendees will be able to send messages, e-mail, and browse the Internet via the Web.

4. When will the laptops in the Internet Café be available?

The Cyber Café, located in Regent 2 will be available from 7:30 a.m. on Monday, March 5th, through the end of the conference.

5. What steps has ODCE taken to protect the conference network?

· Network traffic at the conference is split between two T1 lines for maximum efficiency.
· We reserve the right to deny network access to any machine that degrades overall network performance or attempts to spread viruses, worms, Trojan horses, and the like.
· Please keep in mind this is an open network and come prepared with any necessary virus protection.

6. Will there be any ports/services blocked that could cause a problem with connecting to computers outside of the convention center?

No. Users of the wireless network are entirely responsible for protecting any equipment they bring against possible viruses.

7. Are there modem lines available for me to dial to my local ISP?

We will not be providing modem lines to connect to the Internet. If you only have a modem connection you should plan to connect to the Internet from your hotel room phone.

8. I am a track session speaker. What technology will be available for me?

Each track session room will be equipped with a Windows-based machine, speakers, projector, and screen. Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer will be loaded on each of those machines. Available media players include: Real Player, Quicktime, and Windows Media Player. All computers will have wireless Internet access.

If you wish to use your own computer and connect to the Internet, you will need to connect via the wireless conference network. Your computer will need to be set up for wireless compatibility (see comments above). Please make sure you confirm connection to the Internet with your laptop well in advance of your presentation to allow for any troubleshooting.

9. I am presenting on Innovation Island. What technology will be available for me?

Wireless connectivity will be available with an SSID of ODCE. Your computer will need to be set up for wireless connectivity (see comments above). Please make sure you confirm connection to the Internet with your laptop well in advance of your presentation.

10. I am an exhibitor. What technology will be available for me?

The price for exhibitor space includes one table, electricity, and high speed wireless Internet access. Please be sure your laptop(s) can access a wireless network. Please contact Jami Miller: millerj@franklin.edu or Ann Zimmerman: annz@oar.net with any questions concerning additional equipment.
