The question was raised about the wisdom of picking the technology before defining the learning objective. It should be the other way around -- in an ideal world.
The trouble is there is a wide gap in understanding between many technologists and educators. The technologist needs to be able identify the range of pedagogical applications for a technology in order to help an educator know enough to judge its potential application in their course.
And since people respond best to seeing actual examples, we almost have to pilot a technology with the aim of meeting learning objectives in order to really know what the technology can enable. So following the PIE process is a way of gathering data and experience to inform future decisions.

Any possibility of adding more seats to this presentation? I am interested in learning more, but see that it is already full. Another consideration could be to make it available afterwards as a video or podcast?

We will be at Monday's Innovation Island, too. It won't be an in-depth exploration like the Boot Camp, but you should be able to learn some new things. Stop by the Building the University of Cincinnati's Island in Second Life area and we'll show you around Second Life. You'll be able to try out an Avatar, get some handouts to help you get started, and learn some best practices for using Second Life in education.

I may have erred when I created it by mistyping the name or some other goof. If prompted to locate or create a page you can search to see if the page already exists or you can create the page from scratch. Here is a video that shows you how to create a new page from a link: http://global.cscc.edu/video/oln/Setpageloc/Setpageloc.html.

Started blogging last year and was a part of blogging at the 2007 conference. Have enjoyed reading the bloggers from last year's conference and hope to read and be a part of conference by reading this year's bloggers. Truly enjoyed ODCE last year and hope to attend again in the future. ODCE models active participation at a conference through its wiki and blog features. Kudos to the folks that plan the committee and use wikis and blogs with its audience!

I am glad you found the blogs and wikis helpful. I discovered the service I was using for an aggregated blog feed is only delivering 5 of the 10 or so blogs. I'll have to find another service.

Dr Herman presented on my behalf. I'm glad things went well! In the design I could also see the potential use of a tool of this nature for any content that is "postable" online, such as English composition papers, video game design, short films, graphic arts, business models, advertising, and yes, interior design programs.
I can foresee a "Papercritic," "Videocritic," "Gamecritic," "Artcritic," and so on, all utilizing the small group interaction possibilities that WordPress or simliar can set up. It worked so wonderfully in my own classroom! Ended up a brilliant compliment to our face to face times.

Thanks to all of the participants in this session, we began a great discussion on a variety of topics related to the changing nature of scholarly communication. One comment on the evaluation forms was repeated and stood out: we could have used more time! It was our hope as session leaders to get you interested and engaged in the topic enough to follow-up on your own and even bring it up on your own campus in whatever forum you may have the opportunity. When I get back in the office tomorrow morning, I'll post a copy of the handout to facilitate further exploration. In the meantime, this evening I'm working on your muddiest points and requests for further information. More to come . . . -Kelly

I attended this very interesting session. Here are a couple of links to more information about the project that was handed out:

New Video Game Builds Real-World Math Skills <a href="http://www.uc.edu/news/NR.asp?id=4980">http://www.uc.edu/news/NR.asp?id=4980</a> Article about the project.
The presenters discussed the use of "<a href="http://edutechwiki.unige.ch/en/Anchored_instruction">Anchored Instruction</a>" developed by Vanderbilt University which has several characteristics designed to make story problems more authentic and grounded in the real world.

Photocritic is an excellent example of using web 2.0 technologies in education. It solves a real problem and begins with educational goals. After the session, I talked wtih a faculty member who mentioned that a similar tool could be used in Interior Design programs.
I also think it would be useful in teacher education. Students are oftentimes asked to videotape themselves presenting a lesson and receive feedback. Using something like Wordpress combined with YouTube could move that activity into the online realm which, as this presentation shows, can add much value to the peer critiquing process. Students will be more likely to think about and develop more sophisticated critiques.

In this workshop we revisited the concept of "canned courses" in light of the emerging sources that allow instructors/faculty to customize their courses by "mashup"... mixing content from various sources, adding their own material and sourcing from course repositories (like the National Repository of Online Courses --NROCNetwork.org), and open education resources.

Current curricula are built around content especially at the GER level-- English Lit is about reading from Beowulf to Virginia Woolf; intro psych, history, and so on all focus on relatively fixed content still. it's why those courses use textbooks.
advanced and graduate work is more fluid.
When GER shifts to a more conversational and connected model, then you'll shift in role of content in those courses. But academic disciplines are inherently conservative and slow to change.

Ideal is local design of tools to meet local change pressures, not something delivered from experts.
Content: Open Mashups Participatory Create, co-creaete, recreate.
Yahoo Pipes lets users manipulate the content as much as they want to.
Openness generates innovation.
Educator concerns are for up to date materials. Number one concern is currency. Textbook older than five years old, book reseller don't want. Textbook currency is of critical concern.
Current models assume content is stable. By time content in book gets to student, the content is out of date. TB's are out of date and obsolete in many fields.
Meanwhile there is open source content under development.
